Special Training Program

Overview

This is a unique program paired with the HCA (Health Care Assistant) program. A few of the core benefits you gain from successful completing this special training are.

Learning Outcomes

 

  • Cultural Awareness: Cultural understanding and sensitivity in healthcare practice and life in Canada.

  • Cooking, Meal Prep, Food safety: Comprehensive training in food
    preparation and safety for patient care
  • Driver’s Training Theory: A comprehensive understanding of driving requirements and responsibilities in healthcare
  • Public Transportation: Insights into the public transportation system in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Duration

This program is included within the HCA (Health Care Assistant) preparatory program

Structure & Schedule

Grading

Assignments: 30%. Assignments are weekly, and focus more on general
understanding of related materials. All assignments will be of equal weight.

Exams: Two midterms (15% each) and a final (25%) All exams will be open
book and online.

Participation: 15%, participation will be a mix of involvement in lectures, the discussion board, and completing activities related to the readings / lectures. Alternative arrangements will be provided for students that cannot attend lectures or can attend but it is at a time that is considered a hardship for experiencing and understanding the course.

Course List

Getting Around Canada (Public/private transit, driving)

This course is designed to help you understand the transportation systems
and traffic laws in BC, and how to get around safely and efficiently.

Housing & Utilities

This course provides an overview of the Canadian housing and utilities system, and the skills and knowledge required for successful settlement in Canada. The course will cover topics such as housing options, rental agreements, tenant rights and responsibilities, utilities management, and home maintenance.

Food & Grocery

This course provides an overview of the Canadian food and grocer system, and the skills and knowledge required for successful food management and preparation in Canada. The course will cover topics such as food and nutrition, meal planning and preparation, grocery shopping, and identifying and accessing community resources.

Finances Part 1 (Banking, debt)

This course provides an introduction to the Canadian financial system, with a focus on credit and bank accounts. The course will cover topics such as credit history, credit scores, banking services, and managing personal finances in Canada.

Finances Part 2 (Tax filing, general accounting)

This course provides an introduction to the Canadian financial system, with a focus on debt management and tax filings. The course will cover topics such as debt management, credit counselling, tax obligations, and tax filing.

Jobs and Careers

This course provides live in caregivers from the Philippines with an overview of the job and career opportunities available in Canada, and the skills and qualifications required for success in the Canadian job markets. The course will cover topics such as the Canadian job market, resume and cover letter writing, job search strategies, and interview preparation.

Cultural Differences Part 1 (Social norms, workplace etiquette)

This course provides an understanding of cultural differences related to norms and workplace standards in Canada. The course will cover topics such as social norms, communication styles, and workplace expectations.

Cultural Differences Part 2 (Healthcare, DEI)

This course provides an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the Canadian context. The course will cover topics such as unconscious bias, systemic discrimination, and strategies for promoting DEI in the workplaces.
